American Archives, Holinshed's Chronicles,

and Other Rare Books (with Photos included) for Sale

This rare book is a FIRST EDITION of A. H. Layard's Nineveh and Bayblon—Nicely Rebound, 10-page Preface, Contents—6 pages, List of Illustrations and Maps and Plates—7 pages, Appendix, Notes, Index, and 686 pages.  Folding lithograph frontispiece, 15 lithographed plates and maps (some folding) including 2 large folding maps at end, numerous (664) wood-engravings (some full-page), and almost no foxing, a little on the first few pages, but a few light pencil marks inside and owner’s notes and page references are on the inside of the back cover.  The photos below will demonstrate that this volume is in superb condition for its age.

AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, NOW SCARCE, this is an extensive and detailed description and interpretation of Layard’s excavations at Ninevah and Babylon. In two separate trips, Layard was the first to discover and excavate the ancient city of Ninevah. Maps and engravings illustrate not only the physical site and remains, they also illustrate the excavation itself. This book is of special interest for its work in the translation of the cuneiform script of the region—a very new area of study at the time and still subject to argument and revision. Translation of the cuneiform text would open up a new understanding both in the archeology of the region and its importance to ancient classical scriptures.

After the success of Layard's first expedition, the British Museum financed this second expedition during the years 1849-51. The expedition discovered thousands of cuneiform tablets from the Kings Library at Kuyunjik. When they were deciphered they proved conclusively that Nineveh was located at the Kuyunjik Mound outside Mosul.

No authoritative writer or Ancient History historian should be caught without this authority on hand!  Larry Brian Radka used this reference for Historical Evidence for Unicorns, Astronomical Revelations or 666, and The Electric Mirror on the Pharos Lighthouse and Other Ancient Lightingand he is just an amateur writer and historian.

This would be a wonderful gift to give some serious student of ancient history—especially over the holidays!

Above we see an superb rare reprint of “Denderah, Description of the Grand temple of that town” by Auguste Mariette-Bey.  The two books are offered by Larry Brian Radka for sale, one small text book in French, and one large book measuring nearly one foot by over 15 inches full of plates.  A few of his (light penciled) page reference notes (easily erasable) are on a blank page in the rear of both books, and the rest, except for a few light penciled in “X’s” on a few pages therein.  This Georg Olms edition printed in Germany in 1981 should not be confused with other cheaper editions with fewer plates and no addendum.

This is a treasure house for any serious pursuer of ancient Egyptian history.  If one can read French, the small text book (with 351 pages, table of contents, and some illustrations) contains numerous hieroglyphic translations of the plates in the large book.  If one can’t read French, then the book full of 349 plates, most with multiple illustrations, is well worth the asking price for both books.

The large book contains four volumes of plates, most with multiple drawings per plate.  Volume 1 contains 80 plates; Vol. 2—87;  Vol. 3—83; Vol. 4—90, and a Supplement with nine plates is also included.

I don’t think this immaculate reprint of the original 1870 edition was ever published in English.  This large trove of illustrations, layouts, hieroglyphics and their translations from the enigmatic crypts and temple at ancient Denderah (Dendereh & Dendera) is an essential source for any serious student of ancient Egyptian history and archaeology.

American Archives

Among these rare books for sale are offered Peter Force's American Archives.

Their stately presence on your bookshelf will stand like as a memorial—a permanent reminder and proof of how the Colonists created the United States of America.

Now is your chance to own this complete set of 9 volumes, rebound beautifully and once in the proud possession of the “United States of America, Library, House of Representatives.”

These nine volumes of American Archives are packed with information.

Peter Force (1790—1868) was by name and meaning the main force behind the American Archives above.  He devoted the greater part of his middle and later years to the collection of historical materials dealing with the colonial period and the Revolution.   In this connection Force brought out his greatest work, the monumental volumes known as the American Archives.  As originally planned, the Force project involved the publication, in twenty or more folio volumes, of important original materials of American history from the seventeenth century through 1789—official documents of various kinds, legislative records, and private correspondence of special significance.  The work was begun under contract with the Department of State, under authority of an act of Congress.  The six volumes of Series Four were published from 1837 to 1846, and by 1853 three volumes of the Fifth Series had appeared.  These nine covered the years 1774-1776.  At that point the work suddenly ceased because Secretary of State Marcy refused to approve Force's plans for the completion of the undertaking.  No more volumes were published.

Marcy's decision was a serious blow to Force, and to the cause of historical study in America.  Basing his hope of reimbursement on a definite contract, sanctioned by Congress, Force had gone heavily into debt in order to secure his material.  Now, at the age of sixty, he was faced with actual hardship.  He might have sought relief through a petition to Congress, or by judicial process, but this he refused to do.  Fortunately his situation was not as bad as it had at first seemed.  In compiling the Archives he had procured an extraordinary mass of historical material, much of it extremely rare.  Although he was inspired by the collector's urge to accumulate, he had shown good business judgment in his purchases.  He found himself therefore in possession of a large library of considerable commercial value.  This he finally sold to the Library of Congress for $100,000.  In one stroke, the Library of Congress established its first major collections of eighteenth-century: American newspapers, incunabula, early American imprints, manuscripts, and rare maps and atlases.

The following are the total of numbered pages in each volume:  Volume 1-1886, 2-1958, 3-2010, 4-1791, 5-1759, 6-1855, 7-1787, 8-1523, 9-1891 for a grand total of 16,460 numbered pages of text, letters, documents, lists, reports, charts, drawings, maps, etc. in the whole set.

Furthermore, each volume of the American Archives has its own Table of Contents and Index, and my scan through Peter Force's many thousands of pages has indicated that most—if not all—of its documents, letters, maps, etc. are still included, except for, of course, a copy of the Declaration of Independence.  Reckless collectors may have ripped the copy of this document from most, if not all, of the surviving sets of American ArchivesIn this unique Congressional set, however, the extraction was done very professionally (if a copy was ever originally there), with no noticeable trace of its removal—from the place where the Index of Volume I, Fifth Series, 1776 indicates that a copy should be opposite page 1597.

Furthermore, finding another printing with possibly a copy therein might prove very difficult.  A recent survey of the used books of 41 large booksellers around the world showed no volume I's of the Fifth Series of Peter Force's famous American Archives even for sale in the world.

(More pictures can be sent via email upon request)

This unique House of Representatives Library collection of Peter Force's “American Archives,” in the nine rebound volumes displayed above and below, still contains many of the most important documents of the American Revolution.

Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland

Below are some photographs (lighter ones taken with a flash) of another rare set of history volumes that have sat on the shelf for seventeen years, which Larry is currently auctioning on eBay—an 1807-1808 rare printing of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Their two-hundred-year old pages recounting the history of the British Isles are a little foxed, need to be rebound, but the paes and internal binding still are in very stable and readable condition.  Larry covered the the outside of the volumes and inside hinges with clear plastic tape to maintain their integrity while reading them.  Some remaining library stamps and notes appear on the inside of the front and rear covers, which need to be replaced anyway.

Raphael Holinshed, whose work, commonly known just as Holinshed's Chronicles, was one of the major sources used by William Shakespeare for a number his plays.   Born in Cheshire, probably the son of Ralph Holinshed, possibly a landowner in the region, Raphael was educated at Oxford and perhaps also at Cambridge.  He is thought to have come from Cheshire, but lived in London, where he worked as a translator for the printer Reginald Wolfe.  Wolfe gave him the project of compiling a world history from the Flood to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.  This ambitious project was never finished, but one portion was published as The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1577.  He died in 1580.  Little else is known about this British historian.

The first and second editions of Raphael Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland were subject to censorship at the hands of Queen Elizabeth’s I’s Privy Council.   In February 1587, the Archbishop of Canterbury John Whitgift was requested by the Privy Council to stay the publication of the Chronicles and appoint reviewers knowledgeable in the ways such texts should be reformed.  These reformations are revealed through the various states of existing texts and reflect a process of continuous revision, albeit one that was completed by the time the book reappeared for sale in bookshops in 1587.  Facsimiles of the excisions were published separately between 1723 and 1728.

This rare edition of the Chronicles, published in six volumes in 1807-08, is extremely important because it contains all the censored passages.

It is also noteworthy to point out here Shakespeare used Holinshed's Chronicles as a chief source for many of his plays.  Macbeth was based on information he extracted from its history of Scotland.

This rare printing of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland contains 4,857 pages in total.  The number in each volume are as follow:  1-766, 2-871, 3-1071, 4-932, 5-756, and Volume 6 contains only 461 numbered pages.

However, the latter half of this volume contains its enormous Index, with references to many people and events in the history of the British Isles from the vast reaches of antiquity up to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.  No serious British historian should engage in his profession without being armed with a copy of this extremely rare printing—with all the censored passages in the original edition of Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland restored.

One of its Favorable Reviews:

“This trade paperback was a very pleasant and informative surprise.  It's a heavily illustrated book that explores the possibility that ancient humanity had harnessed the power of electricity.  Preposterous you say, well Mr. Radka, a retired broadcast engineer, may just change your mind.  His investigation into this possibility was an exhaustive effort. With a library of more than 5,000 books at his disposal, his research displays a multitude of examples where the ancients used batteries, telescopes, mirror weapons, as well as carbon arc lighting.

“Radka’s arguments are very intriguing.  He shows evidence that several ancient structures such as the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was powered by carbon arc lights and battery jars.  In addition to the ancient Egyptians, Radka also provides evidence that ancient Indians, the ancient Babylonians, Sumerians, Greeks, Parthians, Romans, Persians, Sassanians and Assyrians possessed the technology of electricity to illuminate their temples, tombs, fortresses and palaces.  Radka examines a multitude of coins, assorted artifacts, tablets, monuments, folklore tales and artwork from these cultures and came to an astounding conclusion: The ancients had the capability of illuminating the night and dark places with lights.

“Illustrations and historical testimony are numerous and this erudite level of research establishes a foundation of acumen never before achieved by any previous scholar on this topic.  In short layman’s terms, I do believe Mr. Radka has indeed discovered something here.

“Radka also shows, and I think most importantly, strong evidence derived from cuneiform and hieroglyphic tablets that seemingly proves the ancients had the various materials necessary--copper, lead, iron, zinc, glass, sal ammoniac, and sulfuric acid—available to create primary and secondary electric cells. For instance, Radka shows several Greek coins depicting what appear to be ancient searchlights at Sicily’s Strait of Messina.

“I would urge anyone with even a passing interest in ancient technology, electricity, electrical engineering or the ancient mechanisms that potentially could have generated covalence, to purchase a copy.  You would be remiss not to do so. Simply stated, this is one of the most important publications on the topic of ancient technology and lighting you will ever find.”

This reviewer—Michael Lohr—is a professional journalist, outdoorsman, music critic, treasure hunter and adventurer.  His writing has appeared in such magazines as Rolling Stone, Esquire, Mysteries, The Economist, Southern Living, Sporting News & Men's Journal, to name a few.

Excerpts from Other Reviews:

The Midwest Book Review says:  “The Electric Mirror on the Pharos Lighthouse and Other Ancient Lighting" is “painstakingly compiled and edited by Larry Brian Radka,” and “is very strongly recommended reading, both for its thoughtful analysis, and its concise presentation focused upon a history of previously little known facts about the creation and use of lighthouses and lighted towers.”

Brent Raynes, the editor of Alternate Perceptions magazine, pointed out that Radka's work views the Old Testament's Ark of the Covenant as "an electrical instrument, which reportedly contained a 'light.'"  He summed up his review by stating that it “will undoubtedly test and challenge your historical preconceptions regarding the development of electrical technology, if not shake them to the very core!”

Ruth Parnell, an editor for Nexus magazine and another literary torchbearer, wrote:  “This is a fascinating investigation which confirms that the ancients knew about and utilized electricity, batteries, telescopes, mirror weapons and carbon arc lighting…a captivating read.”

A review in the fourth quarter 2006 Newsletter of the World Lighthouse Society relates that in this work, "The history of ancient lighting in antiquity is thoroughly documented, including footnotes, endnotes, hundreds of illustrations and an extensive bibliography to support the theory that the Pharos Lighthouse used a reflective telescope and electric beacon."

Frank Joseph, the Editor-in-Chief of the renowned Ancient American magazine and a prominent author in his own right, sheds even more light on The Electric Mirror... by describing this "brilliant new book" as "thoroughly credible" and "a terrifically original book!"

With reference to Frank Joseph's comments above, Bob Trapani, Junior, the Executive Director of The American Lighthouse Foundation, emailed Larry:  "Congratulations on obtaining a wonderful statement about your book. Well deserved!"

David Hatcher Childress, author of Technology of the Gods, The Incredible Sciences of the Ancients, and many more fine books that shine light on the mysteries of the past, reported to Larry:  “Your book is great and already very popular."

Robert Stanley, an author and the Editor-in-Chief of Unicus magazine, wrote:  “Mr. Radka has shown with great clarity that our ancestors possessed advanced technologies.  This is no longer a matter of conjecture.   It is indisputable fact.  Therefore, the historical information contained in The Electric Mirror should be taught in classrooms around the world.  It is a powerful legacy left to us by our ancestors and should not be ignored."
