The Monongah Flag

By

Larry Brian Radka

The Monongah Community Improvement Association held a contest to design an official town flag recently—and Jim Davis, a longtime resident of Monongah and my old boyhood friend sent me some pictures of the flag with his Holiday greetings.

Longtime Monongah resident Jim Rogers with his son Jim “Zeke” Rogers designed and drew the winning entry.  His wife Nancy also helped in the design.

Note that the Monongah flag is adorned in red and black, the official school colors of the old Monongah High School Lions football team.

The freehand drawing depicts Monongah’s old high school, the town hall (above), a church steeple, fireman’s helmet, coal car, and the Monongah mine-disaster bell (below), with the Monongah roaring lion overlooking all.

Rogers’ natural talents truly show through in the intricate details of the flag drawing.  The Monongah flag will be erected along with the United States and West Virginia flags on the corner of Bridge Street and Main Avenue in the old coal-mining town.
